Frequently Asked Questions About Cosmetic Dentistry
What's the difference between cosmetic and general dentistry?
General dentistry focuses on the health and function of your teeth and gums — fillings, cleanings, gum disease treatment, and so on. Cosmetic dentistry focuses on the appearance of your smile — the color, shape, and alignment of your teeth. At W. Eric Martin, DDS, PC, we offer both, and many of our treatments address health and aesthetics together.
Is cosmetic dentistry covered by insurance?
Most cosmetic dental treatments are considered elective and are not covered by standard dental insurance plans. However, some treatments — like clear aligners — may be partially covered depending on your plan and the clinical indication. Our team will verify your benefits before your appointment and discuss all available payment options, including CareCredit financing.
How long do cosmetic dentistry results last?
Longevity depends on the treatment. Professional teeth whitening results typically last six months to two years with proper care and occasional touch-ups. Clear aligner results are permanent as long as you wear your retainer as directed after treatment. We'll give you realistic expectations for each treatment during your consultation.
Can I combine cosmetic treatments?
Absolutely. Many patients choose to combine treatments — for example, straightening their teeth with clear aligners and then whitening once alignment is complete for a full smile transformation. We'll help you sequence treatments in the most logical, effective order for your specific situation.
Will cosmetic treatments look natural?
Yes — natural-looking results are a core focus of how we approach every cosmetic case. Whether it's selecting the right whitening shade or designing your aligner treatment, we aim for enhancements that complement your facial features and look like the best version of your natural smile — not an obvious cosmetic procedure.
Is cosmetic dentistry painful?
Neither of our current cosmetic treatments — teeth whitening and clear aligners — involve significant discomfort. Whitening may cause temporary tooth sensitivity during or after treatment for some patients. Clear aligners cause mild pressure when switching to a new tray, which typically fades within a day or two. We'll walk you through what to expect before you begin any treatment.
When is the best time to whiten before an event?
For in-office whitening, we recommend scheduling at least one week before your event to allow any temporary sensitivity to resolve. For take-home trays, plan for two to three weeks to complete your course. The sooner you book, the more flexibility you have to achieve the exact result you want before your big day.
