Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?
Sedation dentistry isn't only for patients with severe dental phobia. It's a practical, effective option for anyone who struggles to feel comfortable in the dental chair. Whether you've been diagnosed with anxiety or simply get nervous at the thought of dental treatment, our dentist can help you feel completely relaxed from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
Sedation may be a good fit if you:
- Feel fearful or anxious about visiting the dental office
- Gag easily during dental procedures
- Have a fear of needles
- Need to undergo lengthy or extensive treatments
- Have difficulty sitting still for prolonged periods
- Have had a negative dental experience in the past
- Have been avoiding dental care because of fear or discomfort
The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
The most obvious benefit of sedation dentistry is comfort but the advantages go further than that. Different levels of sedation can be administered depending on your needs, from mild relaxation to a deeply calm state where you may remember very little of the procedure afterward.
Beyond reducing anxiety in the moment, sedation dentistry makes it possible for patients who have avoided the dentist for years to finally get comprehensive care in fewer, longer appointments, catching up on treatment they need without the stress of multiple anxiety-filled visits. For many patients, it's the thing that finally makes consistent dental care feel achievable.
Sedation also allows Dr. Martin to work more efficiently, since a relaxed patient means fewer interruptions and a smoother overall appointment. The result is better care delivered more comfortably, a win in every direction.
Oral Sedation. Simple, Effective, and Needle-Free
At W. Eric Martin, DDS, PC, we offer oral sedation as a comfortable, accessible option for patients seeking a more relaxed dental experience. Taken in pill form, oral sedation is an ideal choice for patients who want to avoid needles or masks while still achieving a genuinely calm, pain-free state during treatment.
Here's how it works: prior to your procedure, Dr. Martin will meet with you to evaluate your anxiety level, medical history, and the nature of your treatment. Based on that assessment, he'll determine the appropriate dosage and provide you with the medication either the night before or the morning of your appointment, depending on your needs.
Once the sedation takes effect, you'll feel deeply relaxed throughout the entire procedure. You'll remain conscious and able to respond to Dr. Martin, but most patients feel little to no anxiety and experience minimal discomfort. Many patients remember very little of the appointment afterward which for a lot of people is exactly the point.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry
Will I be unconscious during sedation dentistry?
Not with oral sedation. You will remain conscious and able to communicate with Dr. Martin throughout your appointment — you'll simply feel deeply relaxed and free of anxiety.
Will I be monitored?
You’ll be monitored at all times during the appointment, and your vital signs will be taken. Our staff will be by your side the entire time.
Will someone need to accompany me to my appointment?
Yes, you’ll need a companion to drive you home from your appointment for your safety.
How long will I remain sedated after my appointment?
Recovery time is different based on the patient’s body as well as the medications and dosages used. Plan on relaxing at home for the remainder of the day, and have someone with you until you’re fully recovered.
How are dosage amounts determined?
Dr. Martin determines the correct dosage based on the following factors:
- Age
- Weight
- Medical History
- Anxiety Levels
- Length of procedure
What are the side effects of oral sedation?
After the procedure, you may experience drowsiness, slow reflexes, low blood pressure, and headaches. It’s common for patients to forget the surgery as well.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes. Oral sedation is a well-established, widely used approach to managing dental anxiety. Dr. Martin evaluates each patient carefully before recommending sedation — taking into account your medical history, current medications, and the nature of your procedure — to ensure it's the right and safe choice for you.
What does oral sedation feel like?
Most patients describe feeling deeply calm, relaxed, and drowsy. Anxiety fades, and even procedures that would normally feel overwhelming become very manageable. You remain aware of your surroundings but in a noticeably mellowed state — and many patients remember little of the appointment once the sedation wears off.
How long does oral sedation last?
The sedative effects typically last several hours beyond the procedure itself, which is why you'll need a driver and should plan to rest for the remainder of the day. By the following morning, most patients feel back to normal.
Can I eat before my sedation appointment?
Depending on the type and dosage of sedation prescribed, Dr. Martin may ask you to avoid eating or drinking for a period of time before your appointment. You'll receive specific pre-appointment instructions when your sedation is prescribed — follow them carefully for your safety and comfort.
How do I get started with sedation dentistry?
Simply call our office or request a consultation online. We'll schedule a time for Dr. Martin to evaluate your situation, discuss your concerns, and determine whether oral sedation is the right fit for your upcoming treatment. There's no pressure — just an honest conversation about what would make your experience as comfortable as possible.
