Relaxation at the Dentist is Possible
Visiting the dentist for any reason can be a stressful experience, and can cause anxiety in some people. The doctors at our Champaign office don’t want fear to be a reason that stops you from obtaining your beautiful smile, which is why we offer sedation dentistry to our patients. Sedation dentistry is offered to patients during any procedure that we offer.
Why Patients Choose Sedation Dentistry
While people would rather avoid having dental procedures done, they understand how important these are to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Patients choose sedation dentistry because they:
- Suffer from dental phobia or anxiety
- Experienced traumatic past dental treatments
- Don’t get numb easily
- Have extremely sensitive teeth
- Need a large amount of dental work completed
- Gag easily
- Fear Needles
- Dislike the sights, sounds, and smells associated with dental treatment
- Are embarrassed about the amount of dental work needed
Minimal Oral Sedation Dentistry
We believe sedation should be pain-free, which is why we offer minimal sedation dentistry. This sedation method is administered in the form of a pill to eliminate the need for painful needles. After discussing treatment options with you, Dr. Martin will determine the correct doses for your sedation medication. To ensure total relaxation, Dr. Martin will tell you to take the pills an hour or even the night before the procedure. When you arrive at our office, Dr. Martin will decide if an additional dosage is needed.
During the procedure, you’ll be completely relaxed but still conscious. It’s common for people to remember little to nothing about the procedure by the day after. It’s dangerous to drive after being administered oral sedation, which is why patients are required to have a friend or family member there to drive them home after the procedure.
Will I be unconscious?
No, you’ll be conscious during the entire procedure. You will, however, be extraordinarily relaxed and might not remember the appointment.
Will I be monitored?
You’ll be monitored at all times during the appointment, and your vital signs will be taken. Our staff will be by your side the entire time.
Will someone need to accompany me to my appointment?
Yes, you’ll need a companion to drive you home from your appointment for your safety.
How long will I remain sedated after my appointment?
Recovery time is different based on the patient’s body as well as the medications and dosages used. Plan on relaxing at home for the remainder of the day, and have someone with you until you’re fully recovered.
How are dosage amounts determined?
Dr. Martin determines the correct dosage based on the following factors:
- Medical History
- Anxiety Levels
- Length of procedure
What are the side effects of oral sedation?
After the procedure, you may experience drowsiness, slow reflexes, low blood pressure, and headaches. It’s common for patients to forget the surgery as well.
