Champaign DentistA smile is more than just a smile in these modern times. In fact, a smile can be loosely tied to your self-esteem and confidence. For this reason, we have seen how society has done backflips just to have a more captivating smile. But you do not need to go through a gum restructuring surgery or anything drastic of that nature in order to improve the appearance of your smile. A simple teeth whitening procedure will do. After all, having white teeth can do so many wonders for your smile and your esteem.

Teeth whitening is different from teeth bleaching.

There is a distinct difference between these two procedures although the terms may have been used interchangeably already. Dental bleaching involves the whitening of your teeth beyond the shade of their natural whiteness while dental whitening is just whitening your teeth back to their natural shade. Dental bleaching requires the use of a stronger chemical and is often used on individuals who genetically have darker teeth such as those with dental fluorosis.

You need to go through a dental check-up before being eligible for the infection.

While the procedure is rather routine, this does not mean that you can go through with the procedure without first going for a dental check-up. The reason for this is because the procedure makes use of an abrasive chemical which can cause pain should it come in contact with the pulp region of your teeth. This can happen when there are breaks or worn out areas on the enamel layer of your teeth as well as cavities. The pulp layer is found in the innermost portion of your tooth and contains all of the nerve endings that allow for the same to feel certain sensations such as sensitivity and pain.

The after effects of the procedure won’t last for a long period of time.

One dental whitening procedure won’t last you an entire lifetime. The reason for this is because as soon as the whitening process is stopped, your teeth will right away begin the process of discoloration when it comes in contact with highly pigmented substances found in certain food and beverages including cherries and even coffee. If you want to keep the newly re-gained whiteness of your teeth from fading, then it’s crucial that you keep yourself from subsisting on a diet of highly-staining substances if not opt for regular touch-ups for your teeth.
